National & Federal Organizations

When looking into national/federal organizations, I found National Art Education Association, which focuses on sharing the arts to children all over the world. This organization consists of individuals who are visual arts educators who “mentor” and encourage the use of all types of visual arts. This appealed to me because since I am an artist and went to art school, I feel like it is such a great combination, that and the fact that arts is currently being found less and less in schools. I feel it is extremely important to introduce this to children because it helps their development in all areas and provides another enrichment experience that could help the children express themselves in many ways. Another organization is the National Association of Special Education Teachers, this organization helps professionals who teaches children with special needs and provides added resources and career services. This site or organization appeals to me because this is an area of where I want to focus in. I want to help any delays or disorders in children and help parents through the process, plus I very much appreciate and like the one on one relationship special education provides. I also came across another organization ; National Association for Music Education. This organization encourages the study of music and others “making music”. They have information for professionals, students and supporters so there is a wealth of information for anyone coming to visit their page. It struck my interest because during my work in the infant room, I found that the music and movement company who came to the center and introduced so many songs and movement with songs, it brought a huge difference to the child’s day, the consistency brought a new learning to the children and a repeatative lesson every week and I could definitely see the children light up when it was music time and the huge amount of impact it brought on their development. Many people are not away of the importance of music in schools for any age so I think this is a great organization. Resources: http://www.arteducators.org www.naset.org http://musiced.nafme.org/

  1. Wow. Jaime, I have found out some new things about you and much more that we have in common. You truly have me crying and what you wrote really connected with my own inner dreams. All of what you chose here is based in that creative soul, which I feel can be stifled so easily and so quickly in the infant and toddler stage through teachers or parents who (not knowing any differently) don't allow the children to move and explore in their own way and come up with their own ideas about how to use materials that are in our environment. Adults usually show children how to work a toy or how to paint or do something rather than letting children figure things out for themselves. Or they put children in a sitting position when they can physically support their own back but do not allow them the time and freedom to figure out how to sit on their own.

You are so right about the role of music in the infant classroom. Music has such a positive and long lasting effect throughout our lives. Art as well. From what I read here about your own dreams and these three organizations that you researched you would do well to pursue some sort of therapist work -- art therapy, music/movement therapy, play therapy, rec therapy.

Dream big Jamie. You are almost at the finish line of one big race and I know that you will next find the right path to take you in this direction of working with art/music/and exceptional education.

  2. What great picks! I also believe that the arts are so important in the complete education of children. It saddens me when I hear about budget cuts taking away these programs in the schools. I also love your choice which focuses on children with special needs. My heart and passion will always be with the children and their families who are in need of a voice when dealing with the politics involved with the policies in this field. We are almost at the end of this degree road. Keep believing in yourself and you are going to see your dreams come true. Great post!

  3. Growing up my mother always made sure I took advantage of playing musical instruments or singing in and out of school.I believe this allowed me to grow up for a love of music in my classroom we often make up raps about our work, listen to a variety of music while we are working, or sing and do movements for fun. Great Blog Post!
