Sharing Web Resources: Equity & Excellence

After exploring more of the Zero to Three website, I clicked on the “care and education” tab, and after three options I looked into the “School Readiness Interactive Birth to three”, remembering past articles and issues about getting our children ready for kindergarten and the issues involved. In addition to this coursework, I am a mother myself with the thought of kindergarten readiness in the near future so regardless, this issue is important and interesting to me right off the bat. This is actually an online tool for parents and professionals where you first chose the age range, and look into various learning skills. It initially tells you about what is going on with each age range and tells what they are doing or learning at that stage. Various skills to look into are “Language and literacy”, “thinking skills”, “self control”, and “self confidence”. Under each of these skill tabs, there are options of what to do with your child and other activities, to help these skills develop within your child, there’s also “Frequently asked questions” section as well as resources. This site is slowly developing this new tool so some options are not currently available, such as resources. This tool truly shows how different information tends to be depending on the child and their age range however it is a helpful resource for parents as well as professionals. This provides the caretakers some sense of doing something worthwhile in the long term development of children, this only brings these activities as an asset and builds on development.

Wherever I search throughout this site, there is a feeling, no matter what tab you click, that if anyone has a question about any issue, particularly concerning development, this is where answers are found. When I decided to click on public policy tab, there were advocacy links, alerts, calendars and how to find elected officials in addition to professional resources that could be used locally and a guide for various policies. Very informative!

I do receive this website’s newsletter, however it is mostly about the development of my own child so the newsletter seems to be a more personal venture, then a professional one. What I’ve learned from this site, is endless information that could be a resource that will be used multiple times throughout my career as well as a mother, helping me with any possible developmental issues or questions I may have. I strongly recommend this resource to any professional, caregiver, mother, parent or anyone who want to provide children the very best within their development.

  1. Jamie,
I also love this website. My daughter is grown, but I have three grandsons and many child care clients! This website is indeed a place to go for any information you need! Have you checked out the military services information? It is very interesting and insightful.

After exploring this website I agree with you that it is a terrifice source of information. I also like that the newsletters seem to be geared to a personal level versus professional. I am sure this helps parents/caregivers that is focused on what they are looking for. I have added this website to my resource library but I have also recommended it to the families I work with as a source of information they may be interested in.

    Great post!

  3. After reading your post I visited the website and I found it highly informational for me as a parent, I still have a four year old. As a mother and an educator who has her son in her class I sometimes found it hard to draw the line between being a parent and a teacher. I think the responsibilities most times are similar especially if you are an early childhood educator. So with this understanding, I can boldly say that the website is a great resource for me.
    Thanks for sharing.

  4. Jaime, I also am researching Zero to Three and have had the exact same feeling as you . . . that no matter what tab you click, they have answers and resources for everyone! I noticed that they are having their National Training Institute this weekend and tucked away the dream to go to that in one of the next few years! Thanks for your perspective on what you have seen on their website as you explore it. I find it fascinating that even though some of us are exploring the same website for this blog, we are finding different links and information and having different perspectives. It has helped me tremendously to see the same thing from different sides. Have you ever played the game Boggle? Two people playing the same game come up with completely different words, just because of where they are sitting and how they are viewing the letter cubes!

  5. Jamie,
I am also researching this site, as i see are many others. I have found that it looks like we all chose different areas of this site to research, which is possible because it contains so much useful information. I have not looked into the public policy area, and it seems as if you found some awesome information. Thank you for sharing, very informative post!
