Endless fun with fantastic Children's Literature

When I think about a Children's book I love, it's so hard to pick just one. Now that I read various books to my son over and over before bedtime every night, it was hard at first to figure out which ones stick out that won't lose my interest as well or after nights of repeating the readings I will still WANT to hear them, let alone read them. ;o) Looking back to my childhood, I loved "Goodnight Moon"; probably because of the sing-song like rhymes and saying good night to each individual object or being, and now reading to my son, we love "Jamberry", everytime I read it my son starts to sway because it reads like such a fun song. I also loved "Guess how much I love you" which now has become a family theme or saying in my house; "I love you to the mood and back" and of course since the book was set in Boston; "Make way for ducklings".
However now that I'm an adult and also thinking as a teacher, I prefer books that give children a lesson or a reason to love reading that particular book. Another one of my favorites;

"The Little Engine that could" brings the message to a reader not to give up on anything, which both then as a child I easily pick up and now I can tell other children do as well. You're also rooting for the engine too to get up that hill and yet while reading it you are almost at the edge of your seat wondering if he is going to make it. I also love the

"Rainbow Fish" which can no only count as a picture book with the amazing illustrations and captivating colors and sparkle but it also provides the good will message. In this case the fish decides to talk to various sea life in the sea and gives them it's fish scale as a gift to them, and not caring about keeping the scales for himself/herself to become superior or feel superior to the other fishes, despite the others being envious and admiring the Rainbow fish from afar, and in turn the rainbow fish makes many friends. For those of you who still like those rhyming, sing-song like books;

"Chicka chicka boom boom" is another great one! It not only personafies letters and teaches the alphabet in a fun new way but brings the reader along for the ride of whether or not the coconut tree will fall down after all the letters climb up. The wording in itself is so much fun and so is the journey from start to finish.
I know I've listed many titles but that just shows you how rich Children's Literature is and has been and the lessons in these treasures as well as their play on words, rhyming and sound all contribute to a positive development and fun for all!

  1. The three books that you chose are great teaching books! I especially love The Rainbow Fish, since it teaches children about sharing. It seems like the one book that children of any age can understand the concept and there are great activities to go along with the book.

  3. Three wonderful book choices. The Little Engine That Could is a great motivational book that I found really builds a child's self-esteem.It lets them know that they can do anything if they just believe despite what anyone may say.
